Glossary Lesson 8
Communion of Saints: This refers to members of the Church through all time – those presently now in the Church and those members who have already gone before us and are either in Purgatory or heaven.
fortitude [courage]: The Cardinal Virtue by which one courageously and firmly chooses the good despite difficulty and also perseveres in doing what is right despite temptation, fear, or persecution. U
grace: The help God gives us to respond to our vocation to become his adopted sons and daughters. The divine initiative of grace precedes, prepares, and elicits our free response in faith and commitment. Sanctifying grace is a habitual gift of God’s own divine life, a stable and supernatural disposition that enables us to live with God and to act by his love. Actual graces refer to God’s interventions in our lives, whether at the beginning of conversion or in the course of the work of sanctification.
justice: The Cardinal Virtue by which one is able to give God and neighbor what is due to them.
prudence: The Cardinal Virtue by which one knows the true good in every circumstance and chooses the right means to reach that end.
Saint: A person who, after having lived a life of virtue, dies in the state of grace and has been granted the reward of eternal life by God. The saints enjoy the beatific vision and unceasingly intercede for those still in earthly life. They also serve as a model and inspiration to us.
temperance: The Cardinal Virtue by which one moderates the desire for the attainment of and pleasure in earthly goods.
