Glossary Lesson 5
conversion: A radical reorientation of the whole life away from sin and evil, and toward God. This change of heart or conversion is a central element of Christ’s preaching, of the Church’s ministry of evangelization, and of the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation (1427, 1431, 1423; cf. 821). Catechism of the Catholic Church
charism: A specific gift or grace of the Holy Spirit which directly or indirectly benefits the Church, given in order to help a person live out the Christian life, or to serve the common good in building up the Church (799, 951). Catechism of the Catholic Church
Diaspora: The scattering of the Israelite/Jewish people from their homeland. It began with the Israelites in the 730-720’s BC and continued with the Judeans in the 590-580’s BC.
evangelization: Evangelization means bringing the Good News of Jesus into every human situation and seeking to convert individuals and society by the divine power of the Gospel itself. Its essence is the proclamation of the Good News and the response of a person in faith, both being the work of the Holy Spirit.
new evangelization: Re-proposing the Gospel to people in regions where the roots of Christianity are deep but who have experienced a serious crisis of faith due to secularization. The New Evangelization invites each Catholic to renew their relationship with Jesus Christ and his Church.
Profession of Faith: First made in Baptism; summarizes the gifts of God to humanity. There are three central expressions used in the Liturgy: Baptismal Profession of Faith, the Apostle’s Creed, and the Nicene Creed.
