Glossary Lesson 4
Annunciation: The visit of the angel Gabriel to the virgin Mary to inform her that she was to be the mother of the Savior. After giving her consent to God’s word [see “fiat”], Mary became the mother of Jesus by the power of the Holy Spirit (484, 494). Catechism of the Catholic Church
Assumption: The dogma [proclaimed in 1950 by Pope Pius XI and celebrated on 15 August] which recognizes the Blessed Virgin Mary’s singular participation in her Son’s Resurrection by which she was taken up body and soul into heavenly glory, when the course of her earthly life was finished (966). Catechism of the Catholic Church
Dormition: The oldest celebration of Mary began in Palestine. Christians there celebrate on 15 August the memory of Mary’s “falling asleep (the Dormition)” in the Lord. In AD 602 it became a feast of the Churches throughout the East.
fecundity: fruitful, bountiful
fiat: “Let it be [done] to me according to your word.” This is Christian prayer: to be wholly God’s because he is wholly ours (2617). Catechism of the Catholic Church
Immaculate Conception: The dogma proclaimed in Christian Tradition and defined in 1854 [by Pope Pius IX and celebrated on 8 December], that from the first moment of her conception, Mary – by the singular grace of God and by virtue of the merits of Jesus Christ – was preserved immune from original sin (491). Catechism of the Catholic Church
locution: Catholics use this word to describe, for example, Mary speaking to someone in an apparition.
